A freight claim is a legal demand by a shipper or consignee to a carrier for financial reimbursement due to loss, damage, or delay of a shipment. Freight claims are essential in the logistics industry to ensure accountability and compensation for any mishaps during transit. Understanding the freight claim process can help businesses navigate these situations efficiently and effectively.

HOW TO FILE A CLAIM FOR CARGO DAMAGE

1. Inspect and Document the Damage

Upon receiving the shipment, immediately inspect the freight for any visible damage.

​WHEN TO FILE A CLAIM

Timing is critical in the freight claim process. Claims should be filed as soon as the issue is identified, and within the carrier’s specified timeframe. Most carriers require notification within a few days of delivery, and the formal claim should be submitted shortly thereafter. Delaying the filing can result in the claim being denied, so it’s important to act promptly to protect your right to compensation.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT

Once you have filed your claim, the carrier will begin their investigation. This process can take anywhere from 30 to 120 days, depending on the carrier and the complexity of the claim. During this period, the carrier will review the documentation provided, inspect the damaged goods if necessary, and determine the validity of the claim.
