WHAT IS A FREIGHT CLAIM?
A freight claim is a legal demand by a shipper or consignee to a carrier for financial reimbursement due to loss, damage, or delay of a shipment. Freight claims are essential in the logistics industry to ensure accountability and compensation for any mishaps during transit. HOW TO FILE A CLAIM FOR CARGO DAMAGE
1. Inspect and Document the Damage
Upon receiving the shipment, immediately inspect the freight for any visible damage.
Document the damage with clear, detailed photographs from multiple angles.
2. Notify Stream Shipper Promptly
Inform the carrier about the damage as soon as possible, typically within a few days of delivery.
Provide written notification that includes shipment details (tracking number, delivery date, etc.), a description of the damage, and photographic evidence.
3. Complete and Submit the Claim Form
Obtain the freight claim form from the carrier’s website or customer service.
Fill out the form accurately, including all relevant details.
Attach all supporting documents: the bill of lading, delivery receipt, photographs of the damage, and any inspection reports.
4. Follow Up and Communicate
Regularly follow up with the carrier to track the progress of your claim.
Maintained open communication and provide any additional information the carrier request.
WHEN TO FILE A CLAIM
Timing is critical in the freight claim process. Claims should be filed as soon as the issue is identified, and within the carrier’s specified timeframe. Most carriers require notification within a few days of delivery, and the formal claim should be submitted shortly thereafter. Delaying the filing can result in the claim being denied, so it’s important to act promptly to protect your right to compensation.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT
Once you have filed your claim, the carrier will begin their investigation. This process can take anywhere from 30 to 120 days, depending on the carrier and the complexity of the claim. During this period, the carrier will review the documentation provided, inspect the damaged goods if necessary, and determine the validity of the claim. You can expect regular updates from the carrier and may be asked for additional information. If the claim is approved, you will receive compensation for the loss or damage according to the carrier’s policy and the value of the shipment.
TIPS TO STREAMLINE THE CLAIMS PROCESS
To streamline the claims process, document everything thoroughly upon receiving the shipment, including photos and detailed notes. Act quickly by notifying the carrier and submitting the claim within their specified timeframe. Ensure all relevant documentation, such as the bill of lading, delivery receipt, and inspection reports, is included with the claim. Maintain clear and regular communication with the carrier, providing additional information as needed and following up to track the claim’s progress. These steps can help ensure a more efficient and successful resolution of your freight claim.
